Simulations of Long-Period Ground Motions during the 1995 Hyogoken-Nanbu (Kobe) Earthquake using 3D Finite Element Method

چکیده
Long-period strong motions (> 0.9 second) are simulated in the Kobe area for the mainshock (1/17/95) and the aftershock (2/2/95) of the Hyogoken-Nanbu (Kobe) earthquake. In order to model ground motions in the realistic and highly heterogeneous basin structure, an unstructured 3D FEM (Finite Element Method) is used, which runs efficiently on parallel computers. The simulation results show strong 3D basin effects, especially within the disaster belt at the target sites from KBU to RKI.

Large-scale parallel simulation of seismic wave propagation and strong ground motions for the past and future earthquakes in Japan
Large-scale parallel finite-difference method (FDM) simulations of seismic wave propagation have been conducted using the Earth Simulator in order to clarify the complex seismic wavefield resulting from heterogeneities in structures and the source rupture process during the Hyogo-ken Nanbu (Kobe) earthquake (Mj 7.2; Mw 6.9) in 1995. High-resolution simulation using 240 nodes (1920 processing el...
متن کاملمعرفی ستون جدار نازک توخالی ساخته شده از ورقهای فولادی موجدار و بررسی رفتار لرزهای آن
Thin-walled hollow steel columns, either circular or box shaped, are commonly used as piers in bridges. Recent earthquakes, e.g. Hyogoken-Nanbu or Kobe 1995, on the other hand have shown that these columns are vulnerable to damage when subjected to earthquake loading. This paper presents a new innovative thin-walled hollow steel column fabricated of corrugated plates, “thin-walled steel columns...
متن کاملSeismic Behavior of Jacket Offshore Platform Subjected to Near and Far Field Ground Motions
Offshore structures such as jacket platforms have to inevitably be designed against sever environmental actions. In seismically active areas these structures also become susceptible to earthquake excitations. Strong ground motions recorded in recent earthquakes, including the 1995 Kobe, Japan, 1999 Chi-chi, Taiwan and 1999 Kocaeli, Turkey earthquakes, revealed that the dynamic motions in nea...
متن کاملTOPOLOGY OPTIMIZATION OF 2D BUILDING FRAMES UNDER ARTIFICIAL EARTHQUAKE GROUND MOTIONS USING POLYGONAL FINITE ELEMENT METHOD
In this article, topology optimization of two-dimensional (2D) building frames subjected to seismic loading is performed using the polygonal finite element method. Artificial ground motion accelerograms compatible with the design response spectrum of ASCE 7-16 are generated for the response history dynamic analysis needed in the optimization. The mean compliance of structure is minimized as a t...
